The Electric 12V winch now comes with a synthetic cable

TGS has now replaced the steel cable on the electric 12V winch with a synthetic one.

The synthetic cable is safer, stronger, lighter and easier to use and we believe that it is an important step forward for TGS and our customers.

Synthetic cables do not store energy while under load and are very lightweight. This means that if something should go wrong and the rope breaks, it will fall harmlessly to the ground. Steel cables on the other hand, in the case of breakage, will violently snap back and whiplash with the risk of serious injury to people involved in the winching procedure. Synthetic ropes don’t have any wire splinters or burrs like steel cables commonly do, so there is no chance of getting a surprise hand injury while handling a synthetic rope. Finally, there is the issue of weight. Synthetic ropes are much lighter than their steel counterparts, which reduces the chance of strain and body fatigue when handling lines in winching procedures.

STRONGER

Synthetic ropes have breaking strengths 30-90% higher than steel cables. This is a tremendous increase and allows for smaller diameter winch lines to be used when switching to synthetic, therefore increasing the amount of line that can be installed on the winch.

LIGHTER

Synthetic ropes are up to 80% lighter than steel cables. Aside from the safety benefits mentioned above, this offers some obvious advantages. Switching to a synthetic rope and hawse fairlead can reduce up to 10kg of weight from the front of the vehicle. Rigging vehicle extractions is also much easier, especially in loose, hilly terrain. Synthetic ropes are so light, they even float.

EASIER TO USE

Synthetic ropes are up to 80% lighter, making it much easier to rig up vehicle extractions. Synthetic ropes are also much more forgiving to hands than steel cables because they do not have sharp burrs or “meat hooks” as they are sometimes referred to.
